How AI changes what an IT services, MSP or accounting firm is worth

Quick answer, Oct 28, 2026As of 28 October 2026, AI changes a services firm's value through its contracts. On per-user, per-device or monthly fees, hours software takes off the work stay as margin. On hourly work the saving passes to the customer unless the contract changes. Buyers then price it differently: cash-flow buyers pay only for earnings that show it.

Three things decide it

  1. How you bill. When a contract bills per user, device or month, hours software takes off the work stay with you as margin. On hourly work the saving passes to the customer unless the contract changes.
  2. How much of the work software can already do. Ticket triage, document review, scheduling and dispatch, billing and collections and monthly reports are where we start.
  3. Who is buying. A buyer pricing cash flow pays for lower costs once they show in a full year of earnings. An AI-enabled roll-up would rather buy the company as it runs and make the change itself.

What buyers mark down regardless of AI

Customer concentration, owner dependence and books that need cleaning up. AI does not fix these, and a buyer will price them first.

What we do not claim

We do not publish a multiple for AI-changed firms. The market has not settled on one, the buyers above price the same firm differently, and any single number would mislead. The honest range comes from the specific buyers who fit your firm, which is what the exit roadmap lists.

How to measure your own position

The AI transformation work starts with a baseline for each process (hours, cost, volume, errors) and ranks the changes by what each does for margin, at a fixed fee in the first two weeks. The result is measured against that baseline, so it can be shown to a buyer or lender.

Questions

Does AI make my firm worth less? It can, if your revenue is hours that software now does and your contracts pass the saving on. It can make it worth more if fixed-fee contracts keep the saving and a full year of earnings shows it.

Should I wait to sell? That depends on what a full year of earnings would show. See the exit roadmap for how the timing changes the plan.
